Traxxas Slash 4×4 Serious Fun… for a Toy!

For radio controlled racing enthusiasts, the idea of calling their vehicles toys is simply appalling, especially when they know what racers like the Traxxas Slash 4×4 remote control short course race trucks are capable of. Sure, all the big box stores sell various electric RC cars that truly can be considered toys, and the prices are certainly reflective of that fact. Those cars and trucks often look like they are durable, fast, and easy to operate, but any person who has ever bought one of these subpar machines knows that they are lucky if they last a week.

These cheaper vehicles serve one positive purpose, however – they often get people hooked on the sport of RC racing. Because of this, budding RC racing maniacs tend to start looking for more serious machines. The Traxxas Slash 4×4 is one such model. In fact, it is probably the class of the electric RC industry right now, and a machine that sets the standard by which most electric RC vehicles are judged. A lot of people still do not understand what makes the Traxxas Slash so much better than its competitors, though.

Let’s Look at Some of the Great Features of the Traxxas Slash 4×4

Traxxas Slash Brushless Power

Brushless DC motors are far more efficient than their brushed counterparts, and they are also known to be able to produce much higher speeds while requiring a great deal  less maintenance. The Traxxas Slash 4×4 features the powerful Velineon Extreme  Brushless Power System, which works as a comprehensive symbiotic arrangement that includes the Velineon VXL-3s Speed Control, and the Velineon 3500 brushless motor.  These components are engineered to work together and with all the other vehicle’s components to create a machine that is greater than the sum of its parts. The best part is that this system is ready to go right out of the box. Just plug and play, and the  vehicle is ready to race.

Velineon Power System Features At A Glance

  • Custom-wound brushless motor
  • Velineon VXL-3s speed control for maximum power and efficiency
  • Features full LIPO compatibility
  • Neodymium magnets able to withstand high temperatures
  • High-speed ball bearings
  • Consistent performance race after race

The Slash 4×4 Is Built For Speed

Short course racing requires big bursts of high speed, and the Traxxas Slash 4×4  delivers in a big way. The stock model which comes with the standard 3000mAh 7-cell  battery pack is capable of reaching speeds greater than 40 MPH. For those who need  even more speed, the unit is compatible with the legendary Mamba Monster ESC. Just  drop the MM into the Slash, and the truck is capable of reaching speeds of over 80 MPH,  though novices should probably stick to the stock options until they get more comfortable with the vehicles’ speed and handling.

Four Wheel Drive

Though it is possible to get a high-performance short course RC truck in two wheel drive for a few dollars less, that option is not recommended for racers who want the best in vehicle control and handling. The four wheel drive option means that users will be able to take corners faster and with more control. It also means that the truck enjoys much more stability, even when flying through the air after lifting off a massive jump. More importantly, landing that epic jump with precision and control is a greater possibility in 4wd than 2wd.

The Unbeatable Traxxas Drive System

Taking a look inside the chassis of the Traxxas Slash reveals a drive train that is superior to those found in most operators’ actual cars. The stunningly blue anodized center drive shaft is extruded from a single piece of heavy-duty aluminum, making it the toughest, lightest, and most reliable in the industry.

The universal joint telescoping drive shafts are also built to be tough in the harshest of  conditions. No amount of rough driving can keep these shafts from doing their job, and  the excellent handling of the vehicle is also influenced greatly by these shafts, which  allow maximum movement for the vehicle’s suspension.

Additional Traxxas Drive System Features

  • Revo-Spec Differentials featuring silicone gaskets
  • The most efficient power handling in the industry
  • Revo-Spec Slipper Clutch dissipates heat and is adjusted easily when needed
  • 32 Pitch gears for maximum power and up-gradability
  • Traxxas logo on center drive shaft
  • Tough Tires On The Traxxas

The Traxxas Slash 4×4 comes standard with four officially licensed BFGoodrich Mud Terrain tires, which are about as heavy-duty as a person can get on a short course truck. These tires give the Slash an appearance inspired by the top full-size racing  trucks which is sure to intimidate competitors. The rubber from which they are made is designed for maximum grip, and the tires also feature the BFGoodrich logo in true-to-life white lettering.

Special models like the Scott Douglas and Mike Oberg Edition trucks feature Kumho Road Venture MT tires, which are what those drivers use on the TORC circuit. The  Kumhos are designed with same exacting standards as the BFGoodrich tires, and they feature the company’s logo in a cool raised design.

The Traxxas Slash Chassis Is All That And Then Some

The Slash 4×4 features a newly redesigned chassis which is completely different from any other in the industry. Because this short course RC truck includes four wheel drive,  the Velineon power system, and the capacity to even include the Mamba Monster, the chassis has to be tough enough to remain rigid and straight under the most taxing  circumstances.

Inside the chassis, ribs are integrated into a triangulated structure which allows for  maximum strength and durability while eliminating any extra, unnecessary weight. The  outer portion of the chassis is designed for minimum drag so that the vehicle runs smooth and fast, and it is engineered to prevent buildup of brush and debris when traveling through the most harsh conditions.

High clearance is also provided by the chassis, making the truck easy to navigate  through the most difficult to maneuver terrain. Because of this, getting the Traxxas Slash 4×4 hung up on anything is next to impossible. Additionally, the chassis is  balanced exactly right so that the truck handles turns, jumps, and other obstacles with ease.

What do Others Say About the Slash 4×4?

Worth the money, and then some!, February 2, 2011

I have been an avid RC car enthusiast for ages. Let me tell you, going from store bought RC cars, to hobby shop style, I have been missing out! Got mine the end of Jan with my tax return for myself, and my sons future toy as well. Worth every penny! You take it out of the box, charge the battery (I had extra lying around), hook it up and take off! The 4WD makes it the ultimate toy! I have the “Ultimate edition / Greg Adler series” and I was taking it thru puddles, jumping ruts and ditches, and running it full out on the first run. The range of the 2.4 Ghz transmitter/receiver makes it out to about 300/400 yards, probably more! Don’t hesitate, get it!

Traxxas 2.4GHz Technology

The Traxxas Slash features the absolute latest in 2.4GHz RC technology. Traxxas’  proprietary computerized radio system features first-rate Direct Sequence Spread- Spectrum instrumentation, which is tops in the world of RC racing.

The best feature Traxxas offers in this category might just be their Link model recognition technology. This amazing tech allows operators to immediately start using whichever vehicle they want without having to spend valuable time programming or adjusting. This is great for expert RC enthusiasts who have multiple models they like to take out of the garage from time to time.

Year Round Fun With The Slash 4×4

Even though this high-performance vehicle includes many intricate parts and systems,  users need not worry about damaging any of the trucks’ components from exposure to the elements. This beast of an RC truck is able to go anywhere in any conditions, and it can even handle ice and snow. This is because all vital components are sealed in ultra  tight waterproof enclosures. Even wires are routed through specially designed  watertight seals for maximum protection. All components are safe from the elements,  including the electronic speed control, receiver box, and steering servo. There are simply no limits on where or when this vehicle can be operated, provided the battery is charged, of course.

Traxxas Slash 4×4 Features Modular Design For Easy Maintenance

Traxxas has obviously spent a great deal of time on engineering this little beast to be the best, even when it is in for a pit stop. Because of the company’s modular construction and design, the Slash can be worked on with ease. Four wheel RC trucks are not usually known for being easy to service. In fact, most models make maintenance prohibitively difficult. Traxxas gets around these issues by allowing users to remove the front section in its entirety with only five screws. Only four screws must be removed for access to the rear section. This means that operators can get inside the chassis for adjustment and maintenance in less than a minute.

Additional Awesome Features On The  Slash 4×4

  • High-current connectors for zero loss of power
  • Maxx Cable 12-Gauge wire for maximum energy conductivity
  • Rust-resistant Hex hardware for durability and ease of maintenance
  • Ultra Shocks which are oil-filled for high performance handling
  • Motor is accessible by removing a single screw
  • Progressive springs for tremendously durable handling

Traxxas Slash 4×4 – Ready To Go Out Of The Box

This awesome short course racing machine is literally ready to race as soon as its  removed from its packaging. It comes fully assembled so users need not spend  precious time reading manuals and putting components together. All systems are  adjusted to be race-ready, and even the decals come pre-attached.

You’ve Heard the Pro’s What are the Con’s?

As with many RTR short course trucks the Slash 4×4 requires a set of sway bars. These will really help with cornering.

Battery recharge times are very slow with the supplied wall charger. Invest in an EZ peak charger, this will greatly reduce recharge times. If you invest in another battery you can almost have continuous running as the recharge times just about equal the run times.

It has been noted that some find setup instructions a little over-whelming.  Yes they can be a bit hard to follow but it is unnecessary to follow them to get yourself going. The truck is ready to run out of the box. Charge the battery and drive it first.

Summing Up The Slash

The Traxxas Slash 4×4 is a serious machine, and it is unlike anything a person could ever find at a big box retail store. For those who are interested in a high quality short course racing truck with four wheel drive and a powerful transmission, they need look  no further than this little monster of a truck. The Slash is built to last, and it almost  dares users to give it abuse. Simply put, there is no finer RC racing truck on the market  than the Traxxas Slash 4×4.

Nothing beats the control of 4WD

If you’re debating with yourself whether or not to go with the 4×4, stop it. Immediately. The added control and handling makes this baby well worth the extra cash. Not only will you be able to corner faster, drive over rougher terrain, and crash less, you’ll be able to hit bigger jumps with ease. The distribution of weight and power has the added affect of increased stability in the air. It stays perfectly level in midair and feels more akin to it’s real life counterpart. The 2WD Slash is fun in it’s own way, but if you’re serious about getting into this amazingly fun hobby, go with the 4×4. One more thing worth mentioning. To the 2WD’s credit, the lack of a driveshaft and it’s components make it slightly more durable over time. Be prepared to get your hands dirty with the 4×4. The parts are cheap and it’s very simple to disassemble, but it does require some effort.

Where Can I get the Best Price Online?

Right now you can get a good deal on the Traxxas Slash 4×4 at Amazon.

What makes Amazons price so good, is it includes shipping.  There are a couple of  good online hobby shops offering similar prices to amazon but there freight charges end up making the deal unattractive. Go and see Amazons deal on the Traxxas Slash 4×4
